St Aloysius Deemed to be University, in collaboration with the School of Languages & Cultural Studies Konkani Department and the Catholic Association of South Kanara (CASK), successfully conducted a Konkani Vovyo – Verse Workshop on the occasion of World Mother Tongue Day. This workshop aimed to celebrate and preserve the rich oral tradition of Vovyo – traditional wedding songs of the Konkani Catholic community.
A Celebration of Konkani Heritage
The session was conducted by Mrs. Sapna Crasta, a well-known folk artist and a dedicated teacher. She passionately guided university students through the beauty and significance of Vovyo verses. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation, with more than 200 students actively engaging in the session.
Vovyo, a treasured oral tradition, has been an integral part of Catholic wedding ceremonies in Mangalore and Goa. As Konkani-speaking communities migrated from Goa to South India, they carried this tradition with them, ensuring that it continues to thrive among Konkani Catholic families whose mother tongue is Konkani. The workshop not only provided insights into this rich cultural heritage but also strengthened the participants’ connection to their roots.
A Momentous Gathering
The event was graced by several distinguished guests and officials from CASK, who attended to mark the day as a significant celebration of linguistic and cultural heritage. Dr. Alwyn Dsa, Registrar of St. Aloysius Autonomous College, delivered the opening remarks, highlighting the importance of preserving and promoting mother tongues like Konkani. He wished the organizers success in their efforts to uphold this cultural practice.
Mr. Ronald Gomes, President of CASK, expressed his deep interest in Konkani and its traditions. He emphasized the importance of nurturing and promoting such linguistic programs and pledged to organize more educational events at the St. Aloysius campus to further cultural awareness and appreciation.

A Step Towards Sustaining Cultural Identity
This initiative served as a meaningful step in revitalizing and promoting Konkani oral traditions among the younger generation. The workshop not only introduced students to their linguistic and cultural heritage but also instilled a sense of pride and responsibility to carry forward these traditions.
With the promise of more such initiatives, the Konkani Vovyo – Verse Workshop has undoubtedly paved the way for the preservation of Konkani’s rich folk traditions, ensuring that they remain alive and cherished for generations to come.
